Food and Housing

Food

Groceries are least expensive in large supermarkets. In suburban areas, supermarkets typically include a pharmacy, bakery, deli, florist, etc. Smaller stores do not have such a large variety of goods. Most Americans make a list of all the groceries and products they need to buy, then go to the supermarket on Saturday or Sunday. Many supermarkets offer promotional prices, discount coupons, or sell items under their own trademark at a lower price. The cheapest goods are in generic packaging and the most expensive goods are those with well-known name brands.

If you prefer to eat out, you may visit fast food restaurants such as Burger King, Taco Bell, or McDonalds, where you can have a meal for around $3 dollars. You may also visit buffet restaurants, where you pay one price and can eat an unlimited amount for around $6 dollars. If you have more spending money available, you may wish to experience French, Italian, Chinese, Mexican or any other type of restaurants.

It is illegal for people under the age of 21 to purchase or consume alcoholic beverages. Bars require identification proving that you are at least 21 years old before allowing entry. There are also many bars and nightclubs that only require you to be 18 years old to enter, but 21 to drink alcoholic beverages.

Housing

Hostels offer relatively low nightly rates to young people. They are similar to hotels or dormitory accomodation and are appropriate if you are seeking accomodation for a couple of nights. The cheapest hostels in New York are approximately $20-30 dollars per night. Employees in local shops or supermarkets can often provide information on places to stay overnight.

If you are seeking long term housing, look for information relating to rooms for rent and available apartments in newspapers and magazines. Apartments differ in size, amenities, and price. Rent may vary from $200-$350 dollars per person per month. You must sign a lease contract before renting an apartment. Be sure that you clearly understand the information written in the lease before signing. Renters typically pay a security deposit with the first rent payment. The deposit is returned at the end of the lease contract if the apartment is in the same condition as when you moved in. Renters should adhere to the rules and regulations defined in the lease contract.

Short term renting is often more expensive than long term renting. Apartments are usually unfurnished. If you wish to furnish your apartment you may seek assistance from specialized agencies whose phone numbers are also published in newspapers and magazines.
